Is Hungary a good choice from Kenya?
Hungary is in the EU and in Schengen, with 64 recognised higher education institutions and a wide English-taught offer. Cost is the draw: tuition of €3,000–8,000 per year at a public university and living costs of €500–600 per month sit below the UK and Ireland. Those programmes are taught in English, so the degree itself needs no Hungarian.
Your KCSE is judged on its own terms — the test is whether it would admit you to university in Kenya, and there is no bridging year. Among the countries we cover, only Nigeria sends more students to Hungary than Kenya: 521 in 2025/26, out of 6,029 African students. Entry with the KCSE
Recognition for admission is the admitting university’s decision; the Hungarian Equivalence Centre at the Educational Authority issues formal recognition of the qualification. The University of Pécs publishes the clearest line for Kenya: a KCSE mean grade of C+, subject grades relevant to the programme, and eligibility for university in Kenya itself, which KUCCPS sets at a C+ mean grade. Corvinus University of Budapest and Eötvös Loránd University assess the certificate case by case without naming it.
The Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences asks for an official leaving certificate plus English proof. Medicine is separate: Semmelweis University admits on its own entrance examination in biology, chemistry and English. The student visa from Kenya
Applications go through VFS Global in Nairobi, sole operator for every Hungarian visa category; the embassy takes none directly. TB screening happens after arrival, as part of a medical within two weeks of arrival, including a chest X-ray, a blood test and HIV and hepatitis B/C screening. Kenya is not a Hague Convention party, so documents run through a notary, the Attorney-General, the State Department for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs and the embassy, with no published fees. A self-funded bachelor’s at a public university costs €3,000–8,000 per year, a master’s €5,000–8,000 per year, and English-taught medicine is billed in dollars at US$16,900–20,900 per year. Add €500–600 per month to live on, insurance from €300 per year and the €110 permit fee.
Universities bill per semester. Kenyans are eligible for both national schemes, Stipendium Hungaricum and Erasmus Mundus; only Stipendium removes tuition, and awardees also avoid the visa fee.
