Best European destinations from Kenya
For Kenyan students, the two best-value European destinations are Germany and Ireland — both affordable in their own way, and both teach in English at the levels most Kenyans want.
Germany — free tuition, no APS for Kenyans
Study in Germany is Europe’s strongest value case. Public universities charge no tuition to international students — you pay only a semester fee of about €100–350 (≈ KSh 15,000–52,000, at June 2026 rates). A big advantage for you: Germany does not require an APS certificate from Kenyan nationals (only China, India and Vietnam need it). Your certificates are checked through uni-assist and Anabin instead.
Two honest notes for Kenyans:
- Most English-taught programs are at master’s level. A KCSE alone is an “indirect” entry qualification for a bachelor’s, so you’d usually need a Studienkolleg foundation year or a year of university study in Kenya first.
- You must show a blocked account of €11,904 (≈ KSh 1.76 million) to prove you can fund your first year. The visa fee is €75 (≈ KSh 11,100), with biometrics at TLScontact, Nairobi.
After you graduate you can stay 18 months to find a job — generous compared with most destinations.
Ireland — English-native, strong stay-back
Study in Ireland suits well-funded Kenyan students who want a fully English-speaking country. Tuition runs higher (roughly €10,000–25,000 a year for a bachelor’s), and you’ll show proof of funds of €10,000 plus your first-year tuition paid in full. The payoff is a generous stay-back visa — one year after a bachelor’s, two after a master’s. The Ireland visa is decided in Nairobi (AVATS online, documents via VFS, fee payable by M-Pesa).
Other realistic options from Kenya include the UK (about 95%+ student-visa grant rate for Kenyans — strong, but expensive), Hungary (home of the 200-place Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship), Poland, Malta and Cyprus. We’ll walk you through the trade-offs on a free call.
Scholarships for Kenyan students

The biggest, verified for Kenya:
- Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary) — fully funded (tuition, monthly stipend, accommodation contribution, medical insurance). Kenya had 200 places for 2026/27, applied via the Ministry of Education.
- Commonwealth Scholarships (UK) — fully funded master’s and PhD (tuition, airfare, living allowance). Recent Kenya cohort: ~19 master’s + 10 PhD. Usually needs a 2:1 (Upper Second) degree.
- Chevening (UK) — fully funded one-year master’s (tuition, stipend, return flights). Open to Kenyans, rewards work experience and leadership.
- DAAD (Germany), Erasmus Mundus (EU) and British Council GREAT Scholarships — mostly master’s-level, terms vary by programme.
One honest caveat Kenyan students should know: HELB (the Higher Education Loans Board) funds study within Kenya and the East African Community — not overseas study. So for Europe, your realistic funding is a scholarship above, a family/parental sponsor, or self-funding via diaspora support.
Why look beyond Australia and Canada — Europe’s value case
Right now, most Kenyan students who go abroad head to Australia (around 9,500 in 2024), the USA or the UK. Australia is the single biggest destination — but it’s also one of the most expensive, and the value case for Europe is stronger than the marketing suggests.
