Is Cyprus a good choice from South Africa?
Cyprus is a straightforward English-language option, and unusually for this list there is a resident Cyprus mission in Pretoria, which keeps the visa route short. South Africa is already the second-largest group there among the countries we cover: 97 of 694 African students in 2024.
Fees are mid-range for Europe: €6,834 per year at the two public universities, which teach mostly in Greek, and €8,970–11,520 per year at the private ones that teach in English, plus €700–1,000 per month to live.

Entry with the NSC (Matric)
The University of Nicosia accepts the NSC as a recognised school leaving certificate, and the University of Cyprus and University of Limassol assess it on the same route as other African certificates. European University Cyprus and Neapolis University Pafos judge certificates case by case, with no minimum grade published. Frederick University and Philips University use a foundation year.
You need an NSC bachelor’s pass: achievement level 4 in four 20-credit subjects and at least 30% in the language of learning and teaching. The Cyprus university adds its own subject rules.
English is rarely the obstacle, because it is an official language at home and the usual medium of instruction, so most applicants prove it on schooling rather than a test. The student visa from South Africa
You apply through the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus, Pretoria — an embassy channel with no outsourced visa centre. The fee is €70–140, the higher figure where first registration in the Aliens Register is included. The Migration Department examines a student entry permit within one month and the residence permit within three.
Proof of funds is set by the university rather than by statute: budget €5,000–7,000 per year as an available balance in the month before filing. Biometrics are taken, and medicals are compulsory: HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and a TB chest X-ray, repeated in Cyprus after arrival.
