Is the UK a good choice from Uganda?
The UK fits Uganda better than most destinations. Teaching is in English, the medium of instruction from upper primary, and the UACE is treated grade for grade against GCE A Levels, so you apply straight into year one. Uganda is also a Commonwealth member, opening both Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships. Cost is the argument against: £11,400–38,000 per year for a bachelor’s, £9,000–30,000 per year for a taught master’s, with £1,171–1,529 per month of maintenance to prove.

Entry with the UACE
Direct entry is the norm. Imperial College London accepts UACE principal-level grades, and University College London maps three principal subjects to an A-level ABB offer. LSE converts three main UACE subjects to its A*AA, AAA and AAB offers, with Mathematics at the top grade where A-level Mathematics is asked for. Cambridge, Durham and Edinburgh read principal passes against UK A Levels. Oxford is the exception: the UACE is not on its accepted-qualifications list.
The Uganda Certificate of Education on its own is not enough, and Edinburgh and Nottingham route UCE holders to a foundation programme instead. English is often settled without a test: Leeds and Sheffield accept UCE English in place of IELTS, though other universities hold you to 6 for a bachelor’s or 6.5 for a master’s. You apply online and give biometrics at VFS Global in Kampala (Lugogo) or the premium centre in Entebbe. The fee is £558, with the health surcharge of £776 per year charged upfront for the whole course. Decisions usually take about 3 weeks from outside the UK, with priority options where eligible. A TB certificate is required first, and only one clinic counts: the IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre in Naguru, Kampala, at US$145.
The funds test is the strict one: £10,539–13,761, set by £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 in London, for up to nine months, plus first-year fees and shown through 28-day bank statements or an official sponsor letter. The UK asks for no apostille and Uganda issues none; where a university wants verification, UNEB issues a Letter of Verification of Results and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs authenticates it. Apply through UCAS by 13 January 2027, or by 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses. A master's goes direct to each university.
