Why study in Hungary from Egypt?

For Egyptian students who want a recognised EU degree without learning German or French first, Hungary is one of Europe’s strongest value routes:

• Affordable EU and Schengen study. Self-funded tuition for most degrees is ~€5,300–7,000/year (≈ USD 6,000–8,000), with the cheapest flagship (MATE) from about €2,000–3,000, and living costs sit around €600/month (~€7,000/year) — far below the UK or Ireland. Hungary is in both the EU and the Schengen Area.
• English-taught at every level — especially medicine. Hungary’s signature export is the English-taught medical degree (Semmelweis, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs), plus hundreds of English bachelor’s and master’s in IT, engineering and business — a major draw for Egyptian science-track students.

• No APS. Germany’s APS certificate has no role in Hungary. Your certificates are checked through Hungary’s ENIC / the host university — not APS. Ignore agency blogs that say otherwise.

The honest catch. Hungary charges tuition to self-funded students (unlike Germany’s free public universities), and the post-study job-search permit lasts only 9 months and is not extendable. Time on a student permit does not count toward permanent residence. Hungary suits scholarship winners and value-focused self-funded students — not those chasing the easiest long-term migration route.

Step-by-step: how to study in Hungary from Egypt

Here is the route from Egypt to a Hungarian campus. Most students should start about a year before their intended start date — especially if you’re chasing Stipendium Hungaricum (deadline around 15 January).

Step 1 — Get your credentials recognised (ENIC, not APS)

Choose your programme and check it is taught in English. Your Thanaweya Amma / Egyptian Baccalaureate (for a bachelor’s) or degree (for a master’s) is assessed by the host university and, where required, by Hungary’s ENIC — there is no APS for Egypt. Because Egypt is not a Hague Apostille country, your certificates need consular legalisation (Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the Hungarian mission), not an apostille — and an official Hungarian or English translation. Note that Thanaweya Amma alone often does not give direct entry to some degrees; confirm whether a foundation year is needed with the specific university.

Step 2 — Secure a university place (or a Stipendium nomination)

Apply directly to each Hungarian university — there is no central clearing house (no UCAS equivalent). For medicine, dentistry or pharmacy, expect a written entrance exam in biology and chemistry (plus English) and an interview. If you’re going the scholarship route, you apply through the Stipendium Hungaricum portal and secure a nomination from the Egyptian sending authority (the Ministry of Higher Education / Cultural Affairs and Missions Sector) — the nomination is the real gatekeeper, not the portal. When accepted, the university issues a letter of acceptance, which you need for the permit.

Step 3 — Build your “sufficient resources” funding file

Hungary does not set a fixed blocked-account figure like Germany. The authorities require evidence of “sufficient resources” — as practical guidance (not a published threshold), budget around €7,000/year living (~€600/month, ≈ EGP 34,000/month) for your full stay, plus tuition paid, accommodation and a return airfare. You also need proof of travel/health insurance with at least €30,000 cover for the visa, then local cover after arrival.

Step 4 — Apply for the study visa at VFS Cairo

You apply through VFS Global Cairo (or by email to the Hungarian Embassy Cairo). The residence-permit application includes the national (type-D) entry visa; you travel on it, then collect your residence permit in Hungary — the permit is finalised by Hungary’s immigration office (OIN). Book your appointment, attend in person for biometrics, and pay the fee of €110 applied abroad plus the VFS service charge of EGP 1,453. A decision is made within 60 days, so apply early.

Hungarian universities quote tuition in USD, EUR or HUF depending on the institution — always check the unit (Semmelweis, for example, quotes medicine per semester, not per year). EGP figures below use an indicative rate of €1 ≈ EGP 56.4 (mid-market, June 2026) — the Egyptian pound is volatile since the March 2024 float, so re-pull the rate on the day before you pay.

Realistically, a first year of a general degree — tuition (~€5,300–7,000) + living (~€7,000) + permit + insurance — comes to roughly EGP 716,000–812,000, excluding flights. Watch the unit. Some universities (notably Semmelweis) bill medicine, dentistry and pharmacy per semester — so a quoted figure may be roughly half the yearly cost. Always confirm whether a fee is per year or per semester before you budget.

Credential recognition for Egyptian students (no APS)

This is the step Egyptian applicants most often get wrong because of misinformation online. Here’s the truth:

• APS is NOT required for Hungary. APS is a Germany-only certificate. Hungary uses its ENIC office and the host university to assess your qualification. Ignore any “Hungary APS” claim.
• Thanaweya Amma / Egyptian Baccalaureate (bachelor’s) or your degree (master’s) is the core document. A foundation year may be required for some bachelor’s programmes — confirm with the university.
• Consular legalisation, NOT apostille. Egypt is not a Hague Apostille country, so your certificates need consular legalisation (Egyptian MoFA, then the Hungarian mission) plus an official Hungarian or English translation.
• Keep originals safe and bring certified copies to the VFS appointment.

Proof of funds — Hungary’s “sufficient resources” rule

Hungary wants evidence you can support yourself without illegal work — but, unlike Germany, there is no fixed published blocked-account figure:

• The rule: the immigration authority requires evidence of “sufficient resources” — there is no fixed published sum, assessed case-by-case — covering living, accommodation, healthcare and a return airfare.
• As practical guidance (not an official threshold), budget roughly €7,000/year (≈ EGP 394,800) in living funds, on top of paid tuition.
• Accepted proof includes a bank certificate in your name, a notarised maintenance declaration from a family member (plus proof of their means), regular income, or a scholarship certificate (a Stipendium award covers this entirely).

Visa appointment at VFS Cairo

• Where you apply: VFS Global Cairo (visa.vfsglobal.com/egy/en/hun) or by email to the Hungarian Embassy Cairo (visa.cairo@mfa.gov.hu). You do not route through a third country.
• How: book your appointment, attend in person, and give biometrics. You enter on a national type-D visa, then collect your residence permit in Hungary (finalised by OIN).
• Documents: letter of acceptance, “sufficient resources” evidence, accommodation proof, travel/health insurance (≥€30,000), consular-legalised + translated certificates and transcripts, passport, and the application form (confirm the current checklist with VFS/the embassy).
• Fees: €110 applied abroad (the permit application includes the type-D entry visa) + VFS service charge EGP 1,453.
• Medical / TB: there is no pre-visa TB test. After you arrive, the university runs a mandatory medical screening within about two weeks (chest X-ray and TB, plus HIV and Hepatitis B/C).
• Processing: a decision is made within 60 days — apply well before your semester starts.

Honest note on approval odds. Hungary does not publish a student-permit refusal rate by nationality, so be wary of any agent quoting a “98% success rate” — there is no official figure to base that on. Egypt’s commonly cited Schengen “refusal rate” (around 18% for short-stay in 2024) is a different visa and should not be read as your study-permit odds. What we can say honestly: a weak or unclear funding file is the most common reason a genuine case stalls.

You don’t need a scholarship to afford Hungary, but funding is far easier with one:

It covers full tuition, a monthly stipend (HUF 43,700/month at bachelor’s/master’s level), free dormitory or a housing contribution (HUF 40,000/month), and medical insurance (up to HUF 65,000/year).
