Popular European destinations from Ghana

Ghanaian students traditionally look to the UK, US and Canada, but Europe often offers better value and fewer visa headaches. Two destinations stand out.

Germany — free tuition (our top pick for value)

Public universities in Germany charge no tuition to international students, including Ghanaians — you pay only a small semester contribution. It’s the cheapest serious option in Europe.

• Tuition: €0 at public universities + a semester fee.
• Proof of funds: a blocked account of €11,904 per year (≈ GH₵161,900, at June 2026 rates), or a formal sponsorship undertaking by a German resident.
• Visa fee: €75 (≈ GH₵1,020), applied for online and finalised with biometrics at the German Embassy in Accra.
• Refusal context: Germany is the easiest Schengen destination for Ghanaians — about 77% approval on 2024 short-stay data; the student long-stay route is separate and strong for well-prepared applicants.
• Myth to drop: Ghanaians do NOT need an APS certificate for Germany. The official German Embassy Accra checklist has no APS step — your credentials are checked via uni-assist + Anabin, and the embassy verifies your WAEC results online. (APS applies to China, Vietnam and India, not Ghana.)

Ireland — English-native, generous stay-back

Ireland is fully English-speaking and offers a 1–2 year stay-back visa after graduation. It suits well-funded students.

• Tuition: roughly €10,000–€25,000/year for a bachelor’s.
• Proof of funds: €10,000 plus your first-year tuition paid in full.
• Visa: applied for online via AVATS with biometrics at VFS Accra; Ghana applications are decided by the Embassy of Ireland in Abuja — apply at least 8 weeks ahead. Visa fee €60 single entry (≈ GH₵816).

We also place students in the UK, Malta, Hungary, Poland and Cyprus — but for most Ghanaians on a budget, Germany first, then Ireland is the strongest combination of cost, English access and approval odds.

Scholarships for Ghanaian students

You may not need to pay full tuition at all. The biggest funded routes for Ghanaians include:

• GETFund / Foreign Tertiary Scholarship — administered by the Ghana Scholarships Authority (Office of the President), funded by Government and GETFund, for study abroad in strategic disciplines.
• DAAD (Germany) — mostly postgraduate and research awards via the DAAD Information Centre in Accra; many cover a full stipend plus insurance. See our DAAD scholarships guide.
• Chevening (UK) — fully funds a one-year master’s; Ghanaians are eligible with about two years’ work experience.
• Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary) — fully funded; Ghana is a sending partner, applied for through the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat.
• Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship — €10,000 stipend plus a full fee waiver for one year.

Here’s the honest part most agencies hide: Ghana’s UK student-visa refusal rate is around 26% (Q4 2025–Q1 2026) — among the highest the UK records.
