You can study in the UK from Zambia in English, but the ECZ School Certificate alone does not admit you to first year. Is the UK a good choice from Zambia?
Teaching is in English, so there is no language year to fund, and the system is large: 304 recognised institutions and 685,565 international students in 2024/25, of whom roughly 8.4% come from the nine countries we advise. The home fee cap does not apply to you, so a public bachelor’s runs £11,400–38,000 per year and a taught master’s £9,000–30,000 per year, on top of living costs of £1,171–1,529 per month.
English is rarely the obstacle from Zambia, because it is the language of instruction at home. Entry is the obstacle: no university we track accepts the ECZ School Certificate (Grade 12) on its own for first-year entry, so a bachelor’s normally begins with a foundation year. Entry with the ECZ Grade 12
At home, a credit or better in five O-Level subjects, including English, opens a Zambian degree; UK universities ask for more. The University of Birmingham accepts Grade 12 only through its Foundation Pathway. Edinburgh routes certificate holders through its one-year International Foundation Programme, Glasgow through Glasgow International College, and Leeds says Grade 12 alone does not meet direct entry. UCL takes a different line: two completed years of a Zambian bachelor’s.
The normal route is 9 months of foundation study at £16,995–26,000 per year, with GCE A Levels or the IB the only alternative for direct entry. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, and the 2027-entry deadline is 13 January 2027 (18:00 UK time), or 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses.
English is set by the university: IELTS 6 for a bachelor’s, 6.5 for a master’s, with Leeds and Sheffield accepting School Certificate English instead. Compare UK universities and their entry routes.
The student visa from Zambia
You apply online on gov.uk for the Student visa, pay £558 by card at the time of application, then give biometrics at VFS Global Lusaka, which opened in November 2024. A standard decision takes 3 weeks from outside the UK; Priority and Super Priority services are available for Zambia at extra cost. Nothing can be submitted before your university issues the CAS, so the offer sets the timetable.
The money test decides most files: £10,539–13,761, built as £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 in London, for up to nine months, plus first-year fees and evidenced by 28-day bank statements or an official sponsor letter.
A TB certificate is compulsory, from one clinic only: the IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre in Rhodespark, Lusaka, at US$140. Zambia is not a Hague apostille country, and the UK route needs no apostille; where a university asks for legalisation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lusaka authenticates.
