Study in Cyprus from Uganda

You can study in the Republic of Cyprus from Uganda in English, but there is no Cyprus mission in Kampala — the High Commission in Nairobi covers Uganda. Private bachelor's tuition is €8,970–11,520 per year and living costs are €700–1,000 per month. The not-issued rate at Nairobi was 17.23% (2025), the highest published rate among the Cyprus missions serving the countries we cover.

Is Cyprus a good choice from Uganda?

Cyprus works from Uganda on language and cost, and is hardest on logistics. The private universities teach in English, and because English is an official language and the medium of instruction from upper primary, most applicants prove it on schooling rather than a test.

Fees are mid-range: €6,834 per year at the two public universities, which teach mostly in Greek, against €8,970–11,520 per year at the private ones, plus €700–1,000 per month to live. Only the 12 institutions in the Republic of Cyprus are recognised; those in the north are not. The catch is that Uganda has almost no established route: 8 Ugandans were studying there in 2024, and every visa file goes through Nairobi. Start with the Cyprus country guide.

Entry with the UACE

The University of Nicosia accepts the UACE as a recognised secondary school leaving certificate, and the University of Cyprus and University of Limassol assess it on the same route as other African certificates. European University Cyprus and Neapolis University Pafos judge secondary certificates case by case, with no minimum grade published. Frederick University and Philips University admit through a foundation year.

At home the floor is 2 principal passes at UACE obtained at the same sitting, plus UCE with at least 5 passes. A Cyprus bachelor’s runs 4 years and 240 ECTS, so expect a longer first degree than at home. For a master’s, a lower second is the mainstream floor at the private universities and an upper second at the public ones. See Cyprus universities and entry routes.

The student visa from Uganda

There is no resident Cyprus mission in Uganda: the High Commission of Cyprus in Nairobi covers the country, and the honorary consulate in Kampala does not handle visas.

Your university lodges the entry-permit application with the Migration Department in Nicosia; the entry visa comes through Nairobi. The fee is €70–140, and the department examines a complete entry-permit file within one month.

Proof of funds is set by the university, not by national law: budget €5,000–7,000 per year as an available balance in the month before filing. Biometrics are taken, and the medical panel is HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and a TB chest X-ray, done in Uganda and repeated in Cyprus. Uganda is not a Hague Apostille country: UNEB issues its Letter of Verification of Results, the Kampala foreign ministry authenticates it, then the mission legalises it. See Cyprus student visa requirements and how proof of funds works.

Money: what a first year costs

Budget tuition of €8,970–11,520 per year at a private university, living costs of €700–1,000 per month, insurance at €120–300 per year, the permit at €70–140 and per-semester charges of €30–65 per semester. Add travel to Nairobi if you must attend in person.

A public bachelor’s is €6,834 per year but mostly Greek-taught; a public master’s is €5,125 per programme for the whole programme, the cheapest credible route here. Degree recognition runs through KYSATS (€85.43 per application). Ugandans are eligible for Erasmus Mundus, the only scheme Cyprus lists nationally. See what Cyprus costs.

What works in your favour

  • English is an official language and the medium of instruction from upper primary, so most applicants skip the test; where one is needed, the floors are IELTS 5.5 and 6.
  • A Ugandan three-year bachelor’s is enough for a Cyprus master’s; there is no four-year or honours rule.
  • A public master’s is €5,125 per programme in total, paid in three instalments.
  • Two intakes a year, September, January/February, on rolling admission, so a slow file costs a semester, not a year.
  • You may work 20 hours a week outside class time, in sectors set by decree, with a permit, and 38 hours a week when classes break, against a minimum wage of €1,088 per month.

The honest downsides

  • The odds are the weakest of the Cyprus corridors with published data: 17.23% (2025) of applications at the Nairobi mission were not issued, and Nairobi routing adds time and cost.
  • Cyprus is not in Schengen, and a bachelor’s earns no stay-back: the job-search or entrepreneurship residence permit runs 12 months and is master’s and PhD only.
  • Uganda is outside the Hague Apostille system, so UNEB verification, ministry authentication and legalisation must finish before the university can file; medicals are done twice.
  • Impersonation scams are common: Uganda Police and the US Embassy warned in 2026 about fraudsters posing as officials to sell visa shortcuts. Read how to spot a fake agent.

Our core guidance is free, funded by commission from the universities we place students with. We shortlist recognised Republic of Cyprus institutions, check your UACE and CGPA against the programme's floor, and sequence the UNEB verification, ministry authentication and Nairobi steps so nothing expires. We vet every document before submission: bank statement, police certificate, medical results, English evidence. Premium Placement is optional and paid.

How to apply to a Cyprus university from Uganda

  1. Shortlist recognised universities

Choose from the 12 institutions recognised in the Republic of Cyprus. Confirm the campus address and language of teaching, and check whether the programme admits directly or through a foundation year.

  2. Check your entry level

For a bachelor's you need two UACE principal passes at one sitting plus UCE with five passes. For a master's, a three-year degree at lower second or better is the mainstream floor.

  3. Apply direct to each university

Cyprus has no national portal. Apply on each institution's own form with your UACE and UCE results, transcript and passport, then accept the offer and pay any deposit required.

  4. Verify and legalise your documents

Request the UNEB Letter of Verification of Results, have the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala authenticate it, then have the covering mission legalise it. Uganda is not a Hague Apostille state.

  5. Prepare funds, police certificate and medicals

Hold 5,000 to €7,000 as an available bank balance in the month before filing. Get a police certificate, and complete the HIV, hepatitis, syphilis and TB chest X-ray tests.

  6. Let the university file the entry permit

Your university lodges the application with the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia. A complete file is examined within a month, but allow 4 to 13 weeks end to end.

  7. Collect the entry visa through Nairobi

The High Commission of Cyprus in Nairobi covers Uganda. Confirm whether you must attend in person, budget for the trip, and never let an intermediary hold your passport.

  8. Register in Cyprus on arrival

Register with the Civil Registry and Migration Department within seven days of landing, repeat the medical tests, and hold insurance that meets the required cover for your whole stay.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The University of Nicosia accepts the UACE as a recognised school leaving certificate, and the University of Cyprus and University of Limassol assess it on the same route as other African certificates. Teaching at the private universities is in English at €8,970–11,520 per year, and your university files the entry permit for you.

At a private university, tuition of €8,970–11,520 per year plus living costs of €700–1,000 per month, insurance at €120–300 per year and the permit at €70–140. A public bachelor's is €6,834 per year but taught mostly in Greek. Tuition in Cyprus is never free.

There is no resident Cyprus mission in Uganda. The High Commission of Cyprus in Nairobi covers Uganda, and your university files the entry permit in Nicosia while you are still at home. The fee is €70–140 and a complete file is examined within a month, though the full range is 4 to 13 weeks.

No. An honorary consulate exists in Kampala but has no confirmed visa-issuing role, so anyone selling a Kampala shortcut cannot deliver it. Uganda Police and the US Embassy warned in 2026 about impersonators using forged ID cards and introduction letters. Never hand your passport to an intermediary.

Plan for €5,000–7,000 per year as a bank balance available in the month before the file is submitted. There is no single national figure: each university sets its own threshold when it files your entry permit. The statement may be yours or a sponsor's, with a signed sponsor letter attached.

Often not. English is an official language and the medium of instruction from upper primary, so most universities accept your schooling as evidence. Where a test is required the floors are IELTS 5.5 for a bachelor's and 6 for a master's. The British Council runs IELTS in Kampala.

Ugandans are eligible for Erasmus Mundus, the one scheme Cyprus lists nationally; other help is a university discount decided programme by programme. While studying you may work 20 hours a week outside class time, in sectors set by decree, with a permit, and 38 hours a week when classes break. The minimum wage is €1,088 per month.

Not confirmed. The European Commission issued a positive readiness assessment and put it to the EU Council in September 2026, but no decision has been made, accession needs a unanimous vote of all current Schengen members, and no target date exists. If it happens, your permit would add Schengen short-stay travel rights; the permit process itself is not expected to change.
