Is Cyprus a good choice from Zambia?
Cyprus is a mid-price, English-friendly option that stays small. Only 11 Zambians were among the 12,499 international students counted in 2024. Teaching languages are Greek and English: the private universities teach whole degrees in English, while the two public universities are mostly Greek-taught and cheaper at €6,834 per year against €8,970–11,520 per year private.
Your ECZ School Certificate is accepted for direct entry at several universities rather than routed through a foundation year, and English is Zambia’s official language, which removes one hurdle. Entry with the ECZ Grade 12
The University of Nicosia accepts the ECZ School Certificate as a recognised high school leaving certificate, though it does not name Zambia on its admissions page. European University Cyprus and Neapolis University Pafos assess it case by case, with no minimum grade published. The University of Cyprus and the University of Limassol run it through the same route they apply to WASSCE. Frederick University and Philips University route applicants through a foundation programme instead.
Credential recognition sits with KYSATS (€85.43 per application), but KYSATS covers higher-education qualifications only — your Grade 12 is judged by the university that admits you. English is Zambia’s official language, but the published floors are IELTS 5.5 for bachelor’s and 6 for master’s; below that, the English Language Foundation Programme runs 9 months at €6,500 per programme. The student visa from Zambia
Your university files the entry-permit application with the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia. Zambia has no resident Cyprus mission, so the pre-travel entry visa goes through the Cyprus High Commission in Pretoria; the fee charged there is not published, while Cyprus-side permit fees are €70–140. Allow about a month for the entry permit and about three months for the residence permit.
You show €5,000–7,000 per year as an available bank balance, since each university sets its own threshold. A TB chest X-ray is required, with blood tests for HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis taken in Zambia and repeated in Cyprus. Zambia is not in the Hague apostille system, so ECZ certificates need consular legalisation through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lusaka. Register in Nicosia within seven days of landing.

- The Zambian community is tiny at 11 students, and Erasmus Mundus is the only scheme open to you.
