Study in Türkiye from Egypt: Entry, Visa and Costs
From Egypt you take an education-purpose D-2 visa at the MZ Visa Application Centre in Cairo or Alexandria for US$60, then a student residence permit after arrival; public bachelor's tuition is US$1,600–2,400 per year. Teaching runs in Turkish or English across 208 recognised institutions. The catch: flagship public universities do not accept the Thanaweya Amma on its own.
Is Türkiye a good choice from Egypt?
Türkiye hosted 336,366 international students in 2023/24, though no Egyptian figure is published; 50,815 Egyptians study abroad in total. Price is the draw. A public bachelor’s costs US$1,600–2,400 per year and a public master’s US$750–2,000 per year across 208 recognised institutions, with living costs of TRY 12,000–35,000 per month.
Foundation (vakıf) universities charge far more, US$16,300–22,000 per year, and medicine at a public flagship is US$10,000 per year. Degrees run in Turkish or in English; English is not an official language in Egypt, so most English-taught programmes ask for a test. Egypt is a Türkiye Bursları country. The catch is at the front door: flagship public universities do not accept the Thanaweya Amma on its own, so the realistic route is an entrance exam. More in studying in Türkiye.
Entry with the Thanaweya Amma
Foundation universities are the flexible end. Bahçeşehir accepts the Thanaweya Amma at a 50% overall pass, Yeditepe at 60%, and Sabancı and Bilkent at 80%. Public flagships are stricter: METU takes it at 90% overall as a Category-C certificate, while Hacettepe and Istanbul University do not accept it alone and ask for TR-YÖS, SAT, ACT, GCE A-Level or IB instead. TR-YÖS is sat in Cairo, and preparation for it takes about 6 months.
At registration the certificate must carry a lise denklik belgesi from Türkiye’s Ministry of National Education, applied for at a Turkish education attaché or consulate. A Turkish-taught degree adds a Türkçe hazırlık year of 10 months at TRY 45,000–81,600 per programme, while the compulsory English preparatory class inside a university is free. English-taught programmes commonly set IELTS 6.5 at bachelor’s and 6.5 at master’s. See universities in Türkiye.
The student visa from Egypt
You apply for the education-purpose D-2 visa before travel at the MZ Visa Application Centre in Cairo (Dokki, Giza) or Alexandria (Bab Sharq), which acts for the Turkish Embassy in Cairo and the Consulate General in Alexandria. The consular fee is US$60, collected in cash, and the centre adds a service fee that the embassy and the centre quote differently, so confirm it before you travel. Biometrics are taken, a medical is required, and TB screening requirements vary.
No fixed proof-of-funds sum exists; you evidence means with bank statements (yours or a sponsor’s) or a scholarship confirmation letter, in practice a guarantor’s letter with three months of bank or salary records.
Türkiye asks for apostilled documents, but Egypt is not a Hague party, so yours are legalised instead — the Ministry of Higher Education, then a MOFA ratification office, then the Turkish mission. After arrival you pre-apply for the residence permit at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr; the legal maximum for that decision is 13 weeks. See Türkiye student visa requirements and proof of funds.
Money: what a first year costs
A public bachelor’s is US$1,600–2,400 per year and a public master’s US$750–2,000 per year; foundation universities charge US$16,300–22,000 per year at bachelor’s and US$8,000–20,000 per year at master’s. Medicine at a public flagship is US$10,000 per year. Universities quote in dollars but bill in lira at the prevailing rate, so the sum you transfer moves.
Add living costs of TRY 12,000–35,000 per month, private health insurance at TRY 4,800–5,800 per year against state GSS at TRY 1,981.80 per month, the permit document fee of TRY 964 plus a duration-based duty, and the consular US$60. Two schemes are open to Egyptian nationals: Türkiye Bursları and Erasmus Mundus. Figures in cost of studying in Türkiye and scholarships for Egyptian students.

What works in your favour
- Public tuition is low: US$1,600–2,400 per year at bachelor’s and US$750–2,000 per year at master’s, across 208 recognised institutions.
- Foundation universities take the Thanaweya Amma directly, without an entrance exam — Bahçeşehir at 50%, Yeditepe at 60%, Sabancı and Bilkent at 80%.
- TR-YÖS is sat in Cairo, so the exam route costs you no flight, and a result stays valid for two years.
- Egypt is a Türkiye Bursları country; the award covers tuition, accommodation, insurance, a return flight, a Turkish year and a stipend.
- The post-graduation short-term residence permit gives 12 months after a bachelor’s and 12 after a master’s to stay and look for work.
The honest downsides
- The flagships are closed to the certificate alone: METU wants 90% overall, and Hacettepe and Istanbul University require TR-YÖS, SAT, ACT, A-Level or IB.
- Arabic-medium schooling earns no exemption, so plan on IELTS 6.5 for a bachelor’s and 6.5 for a master’s.
- A Turkish-taught degree adds a preparatory year before year one: 10 months at TRY 45,000–81,600 per programme.
- Work is not automatic. A separate permit is required, bachelor’s students may only apply after the first year, and the statute states no weekly hour ceiling.
- Your odds cannot be measured: no refusal rate is published, and neither the embassy nor the centre publishes a student-specific processing time.
Our core guidance is free, funded by the commission universities pay when you enrol. We say plainly whether your Thanaweya Amma mark opens a direct place or whether TR-YÖS is the honest route, and we work the September intake backwards so the MOFA legalisation chain and the lise denklik belgesi finish in time. We vet transcripts and your funding file before submission. Premium Placement is optional and paid. We never sell guaranteed admission or visas — see [how to spot a fake agent](/spot-a-fake-agent/).
Apply to study in Türkiye from Egypt
-
Check your mark against each university
Compare your Thanaweya Amma percentage with each university's floor. Foundation universities admit from 50 to 80 per cent; flagship public universities want 90 per cent or an entrance exam instead.
-
Register for TR-YOS if you need it
If your target university does not take the certificate alone, apply to sit TR-YOS in Cairo. The exam is offered in Arabic among other languages and the result stays valid for two years.
-
Sit your English test
Book IELTS or TOEFL at a British Council or AMIDEAST centre in Cairo or Alexandria. Plan for IELTS 6.5 overall, and check the band your chosen programme actually sets.
-
Start the legalisation chain
Have certificates certified by the Ministry of Higher Education, authenticated at a MOFA ratification office, then legalised by the Turkish mission. Apply separately for the lise denklik belgesi.
-
Apply to each university directly
There is no national portal. Apply in each university's own international-student system for the September intake, or through Turkiye Burslari between 10 January and 20 February for the funded route.
-
File the D-2 visa in Cairo or Alexandria
With the acceptance letter, assemble the guarantor's letter, bank records and insurance, then submit at the MZ Visa Application Centre, pay the consular fee in cash and give biometrics.
-
Arrive, pre-apply online and collect the permit
Travel on the education-purpose visa, enrol, pre-apply for the student residence permit at e-ikamet, then attend the provincial migration appointment with your insurance and address registration.
Frequently asked questions
A public bachelor's is US$1,600–2,400 per year and a public master's US$750–2,000 per year. Add living costs of TRY 12,000–35,000 per month, private insurance at TRY 4,800–5,800 per year and the permit document fee of TRY 964. Foundation universities are a different market at US$16,300–22,000 per year.
At some, not all. Bahçeşehir accepts it at a 50% overall pass, Yeditepe at 60%, Sabancı and Bilkent at 80%, and METU at 90% as a Category-C certificate. Hacettepe and Istanbul University do not accept it alone and require TR-YÖS, SAT, ACT, A-Level or IB. Every offer still needs a lise denklik belgesi at registration.
No. Many degrees are taught in English, and for those you prove English rather than Turkish, commonly IELTS 6.5 at bachelor's. Turkish only becomes compulsory if you choose a Turkish-medium programme, which means a Türkçe hazırlık year at TRY 45,000–81,600 per programme to reach C1.
At the MZ Visa Application Centre in Cairo (Dokki) or Alexandria (Bab Sharq), which acts for the Turkish missions. MZ states a general baseline of at least 3 working days, not broken out for student visas. Allow longer in practice, because your acceptance letter and legalised documents must be ready first.
There is no fixed statutory sum, so no honest figure can be quoted. Sufficiency is judged case by case on bank statements (yours or a sponsor's) or a scholarship confirmation letter, usually a guarantor's letter with three months of bank statements or salary slips. Insufficient or unverifiable funds is the first-named refusal ground, so build the file properly.
Two schemes: Türkiye Bursları and Erasmus Mundus. Türkiye Bursları covers tuition, accommodation, health insurance, a return flight, a one-year Turkish course and a monthly stipend, and it assigns your university and department. Applications run 10 January to 20 February each year. No paid service can secure a place.
Only with a separate work permit from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security — the student residence permit does not carry work rights by itself. Bachelor's students may apply only after completing the first year; master's and doctoral students face no wait. The net minimum wage is TRY 28,075.50 per month.
The post-graduation residence permit is being extended. A YÖK circular to universities dated 2 August 2026, following a migration-management legal opinion, allows a further year on top of the first, taking it to two years in total. You still apply within six months of graduation, and it still carries no automatic work rights. The circular itself is not published, so treat this as in rollout.
