Is Hungary a good choice from Egypt?
Hungary hosted 43,653 international students in 2025/26, of whom 6,029 (13.2%) came from Africa; Egypt is not broken out, though 50,815 Egyptians study abroad. Price is the draw: a public bachelor’s costs €3,000–8,000 per year and a public master’s €5,000–8,000 per year across 64 recognised institutions, with living costs of €500–600 per month.
Medicine is the expensive exception at US$16,900–20,900 per year. Degrees are taught in English, but English is not an official language at home, so you will sit IELTS or TOEFL. The catch is at the front door: Hungarian universities accept the Thanaweya Amma, or the Egyptian Baccalaureate now replacing it, from the academic stream only, and technical and vocational streams are refused. Entry with the Thanaweya Amma
Recognition for admission is the admitting university’s decision; formal equivalence comes from the Hungarian Equivalence Centre, and no APS certificate is involved. The University of Pécs publishes the clearest rule — academic stream only. Corvinus University of Budapest, the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE), Óbuda University and Semmelweis University run a direct route and assess it case by case.
Entrance examinations are the real filter: a written mathematics paper at Corvinus, biology plus chemistry at every medical faculty. The English floor is IELTS 5.5 at bachelor’s and 6 at master’s, with Corvinus asking 6.0. If grades or English fall short, the route is a private pathway foundation at €3,000–4,200 per semester, not the Hungarian-language preparatory year, which exists for Hungarian-taught degrees. The student visa from Egypt
You apply through VFS Global in Cairo, which handles the study residence permit; the embassy takes other D-visa types directly. The fee is €110 and biometrics are taken. Budget 6 to 9 weeks to a decision. Hungary publishes no fixed proof-of-funds sum and uses no blocked account; you evidence means with a bank statement, a sponsor letter or a scholarship award.
TB screening happens after arrival, as part of a medical within two weeks of arrival, including a chest X-ray, a blood test and HIV and hepatitis B/C screening. Hungary asks for apostilled documents, but Egypt is not a Hague party, so yours are legalised instead: certification by the issuing university or the Ministry of Higher Education, then a Ministry of Foreign Affairs ratification office, then the Hungarian mission in Cairo. The honest downsides
- Technical and vocational Thanaweya Amma streams are refused, so students from those streams have no direct bachelor’s route.
- The only published measure of your odds is poor: about 25.1% of Schengen short-stay applications at Hungary’s Cairo consulate were not issued — a short-stay figure, not a student-permit one.
- Legalisation is sequential and slow, and it has to finish before the university deadline.
- The job-search permit lasts 9 months, is not extendable, and study years do not count towards permanent residence.
- Since 1 January 2024 a study permit carries no family-member permits, so a spouse or child cannot join you on it.
