Is Hungary a good choice from Ghana?
Hungary is in the EU and in Schengen, with 64 recognised higher education institutions and a wide English-taught offer, medicine included. Price is the pull: tuition of €3,000–8,000 per year at a public university and living costs of €500–600 per month undercut the UK and Ireland. Those programmes are taught in English, so the degree needs no Hungarian.
Your WASSCE is judged on its own terms — the test is whether it would admit you to university in Ghana, and Hungary imposes no bridging year. The Ghanaian cohort is small: 378 students in 2025/26, within 6,029 African students. Entry with the WASSCE
Recognition for admission is the admitting university’s decision; the Hungarian Equivalence Centre at the Educational Authority issues formal recognition of the qualification. The University of Pécs is explicit for Ghana: WASSCE at six subjects including English and mathematics, all at credit grade, and a certificate that meets Ghanaian university entrance criteria, which at the University of Ghana and KNUST means three core credits (English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science) and three electives at A1–C6, with an aggregate of 24 or better.
Corvinus University of Budapest and Eötvös Loránd University assess the certificate case by case without naming it. The Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences asks for an official leaving certificate plus English proof. Medicine is separate: Semmelweis University admits on its own entrance examination in biology, chemistry and English. TB screening happens after arrival, as part of a medical within two weeks of arrival, including a chest X-ray, a blood test and HIV and hepatitis B/C screening. Ghana issues no apostille: certificates are authenticated by the issuing body, then legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy. Universities bill per semester. Ghanaians are eligible for both national schemes, Stipendium Hungaricum and Erasmus Mundus, but only Stipendium removes tuition.
