Is Hungary a good choice from Uganda?
Hungary hosted 43,653 international students in 2025/26, including 6,029 from Africa (13.2%). Uganda is not itemised in that breakdown, and 6,044 Ugandans study abroad in total, so you would join a small group. Cost is the argument. A public bachelor’s is €3,000–8,000 per year and a public master’s €5,000–8,000 per year across 64 recognised institutions, with living costs of €500–600 per month.
Degrees are taught in English, and because English is the medium of instruction from upper primary at home, many universities waive the language test. Entry with the UACE
Hungary applies one statutory test: a school-leaving examination that admits you to university at home. For Uganda that is UACE (after UCE) from UNEB, at the national standard of 2 principal passes at UACE obtained at the same sitting, plus UCE with at least 5 passes. The UACE is not itemised on the University of Pécs country schedule.
Corvinus University of Budapest, the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE), Óbuda University and Semmelweis University assess it the same way, and there is no bridging year. Entrance examinations are the real filter: a written mathematics paper at Corvinus, biology plus chemistry at every medical faculty. Where grades or English fall short the route is a private pathway foundation at €3,000–4,200 per semester, not the Hungarian-language preparatory year. The student visa from Uganda
You apply through VFS Global in Nairobi on behalf of the Hungarian Embassy there, because Uganda falls in its consular district; the liaison office in Kampala cannot issue consular documents. The fee is €110, biometrics are given in person and the quoted time is up to eight weeks, sometimes longer, because the immigration authority in Hungary makes the decision.
Hungary sets no fixed proof-of-funds sum and uses no blocked account; you evidence subsistence, accommodation and return travel with a bank statement, a sponsor letter or a scholarship award. TB screening happens after arrival. Hungary asks for apostilled documents, but Uganda is not a Hague party, so the chain is UNEB’s Letter of Verification of Results, then Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication in Kampala, then legalisation by the Hungarian mission.
